The use of anesthesia is necessary to perform many important procedures in veterinary medicine.  At the Union Pet Clinic, we use one of the safest inhalant anesthetics, Sevoflurane, available in veterinary and human medicine.  Even so, we are aware that there are risks any time a patient is anesthetized.

Our patients who undergo anesthesia are monitored closely by our technicians using electronic machines for constant awareness of heart rate, oxygenation, and respiratory rate. An Electrocardiogram (ECG) is always connected to the patients as well, so cardiac function can be observed continuously.  Our patient’s heart rate, mucous membrane color, and pulses are monitored and recorded throughout the entire surgery and recovery period.

Prior to surgery, we recommend testing a small sample of blood and analyzing a pre-surgical electrocardiogram (ECG) to rule out any medical condition that may increase the risk of anesthesia. Intravenous catheterization and fluid therapy is very important to keep our patients hydrated during surgery, maintain blood pressure, and to provide access to the circulatory system in case of an emergency.

The staff and doctors at the Union Pet Clinic take every precaution to ensure that your pet will safely recover from any necessary anesthetic event.
